How to Activate Office with an Online Key (Windows)

Before You Begin

Make sure you have the following ready:

• Your Office product key (received via email and in your account)
• A stable internet connection
• Microsoft Office already installed on your PC (see “How to Download Office” below if you need to install it first)

Step 1 — Open Any Office Application

Open any Office app such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint from the Start menu.

If Office is not yet activated, you’ll see a yellow bar or a prompt asking you to activate or enter a product key.

Step 2 — Enter Your Product Key

Go to File → Account (or File → Help in older versions). Click “Change Product Key” or “Activate Product.”

Enter your 25-character product key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX and click “Activate”.

Tip: Use the Copy button on your order page to copy the key without typos, then paste it with Ctrl+V.

Step 3 — Activation Complete

Office will verify your key online with Microsoft servers. After a few seconds, you’ll see “Product Activated” in the Account page.

Your Office suite is now fully activated and ready to use.

How to Download & Install Office

Important: With an Online Key, you cannot download Office directly from Microsoft’s website — that option is only available for Bind Keys. Use our download tool below to get the official Microsoft installer for your version and language.

Alternative: Activate via Command Prompt

If the in-app method doesn’t work, you can activate via Command Prompt:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
2. Navigate to your Office installation folder: cd "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice16" (or cd "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice16")
3. Install the key: cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
4. Activate: cscript ospp.vbs /act

You should see a “Product activation successful” message.

Troubleshooting

“This product key didn’t work”

Double-check that you copied the key correctly with no extra spaces. Make sure the key matches the Office version you have installed (e.g., a 2021 key won’t work on Office 2019).

Office shows “Unlicensed Product”

Go to File → Account and click “Change Product Key.” Re-enter your key. If the issue persists, try the Command Prompt method above.
