How to Activate Office on Mac (Bind Key)

Step-by-step guide to bind your Microsoft Office key to your Microsoft account and install it on your Mac.

In This Guide

    Before You Begin

    • Your Office Bind Key (received via email and in your account)
    • A Microsoft account (create one free at account.microsoft.com)
    • A Mac running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
    • A stable internet connection

Step 1 — Redeem Your Key Online

Open Safari or your preferred browser and go to setup.office.com. Sign in with your Microsoft account.

Enter your 25-character product key, select your country and language, then click “Next”.

Important: The key will be permanently linked to this Microsoft account. Choose the account you want to use long-term.

Step 2 — Download Office for Mac

After redeeming, go to account.microsoft.com/services. Find your Office product and click “Install”. Select “Mac” as your platform.

The .pkg installer will download to your Downloads folder.

Note: The Mac App Store only has Microsoft 365 (subscription version). If you purchased Office 2016, 2019, 2021, or 2024, you must download the installer from the Microsoft website — it is not available on the App Store.

    Step 3 — Install Office

Open the downloaded .pkg file and follow the installation wizard. Click “Continue” through the steps, then “Install.” You may need to enter your Mac password.

The installer will set up Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

Step 4 — Sign In to Activate

Open any Office app (e.g., Microsoft Word) from your Applications folder or Launchpad. Click “Sign In” and enter your Microsoft account credentials.

Office will activate automatically. You can verify by clicking the app name in the menu bar → “About” — it should show your license status.

    Troubleshooting

    Office doesn’t appear after installation

Check your Applications folder. If you used the Mac App Store, make sure the download completed. Try restarting your Mac.

    Activation prompt keeps appearing

Make sure you’re signed in with the same Microsoft account used to redeem the key. Go to any Office app → menu bar → sign out, then sign in again.
